"So what so we do now?"
The question hangs in the air as I look over to Mar. His gaze is fixed on the controls as he sets the course home. He is silent for a moment as he pushes buttons; and, he says, "Well, not much to do now, but wait. The course should be locked in."
"No, silly, I mean about us?" I tell him.
Mar looks at me out of the corner of his eye. "Oh, that," he says. "We should probably talk about it-about us."
"Is there an us?"
He turns from the screen, and takes my hands. "Look Kim," he says. "In some ways, there's always been an us. And it's terrible to say this, but now that I have the freedom to choose, I don't want to be with anyone, but you."
"Oh Mar," I say, tears filling my eyes. "I want to believe it so badly, but I just don't know-it's been ten years. And things seem so fast now."
"I admit, I feel very conflicted," he says. "On the one hand, I feel so grieved for my race-I'm the last one. But, I can't help feeling glad to be here with you. If it had to be a tragedy that brought us together, then maybe that's how things had to be."
We embrace, tears openly streaming from our eyes. This moment is perfect, and nothing could ruin it. Just then, we are pulled to the side, as the ship lurches toward the starboard.
"Mar, what's happening!?" I scream.
"I don't know," he replies, dashing to the console. "But, our controls are all dead. I can't steer or anything."
"Is the ship broken?"
"No, we're still powered up and the systems appear to be running just fine," Mar says. "But, we have no control."
The lights begin to flicker, and I instinctively move closer to him. He takes my hand and leads me down the hall, into the observation room. Nervously, we peer out the porthole.
"Is that..." I begin my question, but I can't finish it.
"I think it is," Mar answers. "That's a stone spacestation."
